InsightFD supports FireStation Fire Behavior Prediction System

Robotics Cats is working with Leitek and ADAI of the University of Coimbra to integrate FireStation Fire Behavior Prediction Systems with InsightFD wildfire detection system. Users can view the fire behavior / fire-front spread prediction at the fire hotspot located by InsightFD management platform. Real-time actual and future projected wildfire information will help stakeholders to work together more effectively in fire suppression and incident management.

ADAI (Association for the Department of Industrial Aerodynamic) is the pioneering wildfire research center in Portugal and Europe. Dr Domingos X. Viegas, founder of ADAI, has been leading researchers to study forest fires, natural hazards and safety since 1990. The Forest Fire Research Centre (CEIF) in ADAI is dedicated to the applied research in the field of forest fires and fires in the wildland-urban interface (WUI).

The terrain is divided into cells, over which fuel properties are assumed constant. Fire growth simulation thus becomes a process of contagion between burning and non-burning cells

One research project is FireStation Fire Behavior Prediction Systems. By taking into account of Meteorology, Topography and Fuels information, FireStation simulates behavior and propagation characteristics of wildfire. FireStation is using Rothermel’s surface fire spread model (1972). FireStation predicts the rate of spread of wildfire, spread direction, area burned, perimeter and linear intensity of fire front, etc.

“With climate change causes larger wildfire risks and damages in Portugal! Our mission is to employ technologies to solve problems. By integration three leading technologies – InsightFD’s detection, FireStation’s prediction, and drone-based monitoring – we believe we will have a holistic comprehension of wildfire. Holistic means real-time and near future. Wildfires are dynamic threats. Accurate and predictive visibilities of wildfire will help to formulate effective and efficient fire suppression tactics.” Said Clelio Dinis Leite, CEO of Leitek Innovative Solutions and Chairman of the Focus Group of Drone Standard Scenarios in UVS International.

FireStation fire behavior simulation results are visualized on InsightFD management platform. “With a click on the fire hotspot located by our AI-based wildfire detection algorithm, InsightFD user can simulate the future fire behaviors and visualize them on the InsightFD management platform. Different color zones represent the areas in which the fire will spread at different intervals. Fire locations (longitude, latitude, altitude) and sizes, present and future, are at our user’s fingertip! It is our design goal to make our product useful and easy-to-use.” Explained by Kaisen Chiang, Head of Solution Development.
