Wildfires, Weeds, and Wings: Introducing FireBird Guard at Energy Tech Summit Bilbao

In solar energy, even small operational risks—a stray ignition source in a nearby field, overgrown weeds, or bird activity—can lead to costly disruption. At the Energy Tech Summit 2026 in Bilbao, RoboticsCats introduced a solution built around this reality: FireBird Guard.

Bilbao: Where Energy Frontiers Meet

Bilbao sits at the intersection of tradition and innovation, and the summit reflected that energy. From exploring green hydrogen at the Energy Intelligence Center to seeing Flexiramics’ award-winning ceramic fiber PCB innovation, one message stood out: the energy transition is not only about generating cleaner power, but also about protecting critical infrastructure and improving resilience. Against the backdrop of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Basque Country (Euskadi), we spoke with industry leaders who confirmed a key insight: solar power plants face multiple operational risks that traditional monitoring often addresses in separate silos.

Beyond Detection: The Evolution of FireBird Guard

RoboticsCats has long focused on early wildfire detection. But our work with solar operators showed that fire is only one part of the asset-protection challenge. For solar plants in wildland environments, a more integrated approach is needed.

FireBird Guard is our response: a 3-in-1 AI-powered solution designed for the solar PV sector. Co-created with customers in Brazil and Chile, it combines wildfire detection with two additional capabilities: vegetation monitoring and bird presence detection.

Why 3-in-1 Matters

The system addresses three major drivers of solar O&M costs:

  • Wildfire defence: Detects external fire threats early, helping operators respond before damage spreads.
  • Vegetation management: Identifies overgrown weeds and vegetation that can cause shading, reduce panel efficiency, and increase fire risk.
  • Bird mitigation: Detects bird presence and supports deterrence workflows to reduce soiling and related performance losses.

What Bilbao Confirmed

As an Energy Tech Challengers Climate X Wildcard Finalist, presenting FireBird Guard in Bilbao gave us a valuable opportunity to test and refine the concept. The feedback from operators, partners, and investors reinforced a clear point: solar operators do not need fragmented tools; they need integrated intelligence. By combining these functions in one AI solution, we help operators move from reactive maintenance to proactive asset protection while lowering total cost of ownership.

We left Bilbao with new connections, sharper market insight, and a clearer mission. Wildfires, overgrown vegetation, and bird-related losses may be invisible at first, but their impact on solar ROI is real. FireBird Guard is designed to help operators manage them sooner and act faster.
