Enhancing WUI Wildfire Detection: Combining Privacy, AI Masking, and Human Expertise

The Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) is the area where human development meets or intermingles with undeveloped wildland vegetation. It’s a transition zone between unoccupied land and human development, typically found at the edges of cities and towns adjacent to forests, grasslands, or other natural areas. The WUI is particularly vulnerable to wildfires, as it combines flammable vegetation with human structures and activities that can both ignite and be threatened by fires.

WUI wildfires are more destructive than remote wildfires due to their proximity to populated areas, increased human-caused ignition sources, and complex fuel mix of natural vegetation and man-made structures.   • North Complex Fire (2020) – Butte, Plumas, and Yuma counties, California (Burned area: 129068 ha, Structures destroyed: 2455, Deaths: 16)
  • Glass Fire (2020) – Sonoma County, California (Burned area: 27310 ha, Structures destroyed: 1555, Deaths: 0)
  • Palisades Fire (2025) – Los Angeles County, California (Burned area: 9594 ha, Structures destroyed: 6837, Deaths: 12)
  • Eaton Fire (2025) – Los Angeles County, California (Burned area: 5674 ha, Structures destroyed: 9418, Deaths: 18)

These fires demonstrate the devastating impact of WUI wildfires on lives and property. The Camp Fire remains the most destructive in history, while the recent Palisades and Eaton fires highlight the increasing severity of wildfire risks.

Challenges in WUI Wildfire Detection
