A Trailblazing Biodiversity Conservation Project in Hong Kong: Integrating Regenerative Farming with 24×7 IoT Monitoring and 5G-Connected AI Wildlife Surveillance
In Hong Kong, a pioneering biodiversity project is revitalizing an inactive rice farm through regenerative farming aimed at producing high-quality, high-yield rice. The harvest will be shared with the local community to deepen engagement and appreciation for conservation efforts.
This initiative is part of the “Between Mountain and Sea – Nature Conservation Management for Shui Hau” project, managed by the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society (HKBWS). Robotics Cats is contributing to the digital transformation aspect of the project.
Central to the project is restoring pond and water networks with LoRaWAN IoT sensors that continuously monitor water levels and soil moisture. This 24×7 real-time data enables timely, efficient irrigation, addressing the challenge of limited manpower and ensuring optimal habitat and crop conditions.
Natural pest control is emphasized by relying on raptors to keep rat populations in check, eliminating the need for pesticides and fostering ecological balance.
The project features Hong Kong’s first use of 5G-connected, AI-powered cameras installed on perch tops to detect and observe bird behaviors with high precision. Some cameras also feed HD photos to an AI wildfire detection system, enabling early wildfire alerts in nearby mountains.
Data from tens of IoT sensors and HD cameras is reliably transmitted through industrial-grade 5G cellular routers and robust 5G data services, overcoming the lack of traditional telecommunication infrastructure in remote wetlands.
All equipment is solar-powered, ensuring continuous off-grid operation with minimal environmental impact.
Local community engagement is critical. By sharing harvests and actively involving local residents, the project fosters deep stewardship and a lasting positive impact.
