5G x Construction Fire Detection

Robotics Cats is partnering with mobile operators to provide 5G-powered LookOut Construction Fire Detection Service.

According to a recent MDPI whitepaper, 5G technology will help the construction industry to overcome five major challenges in using ICT (Information and Communications Technologies):

  1. wide coverage in different locations
  2. quick to implement
  3. support a large number of devices
  4. support rapidly changing physical environments
  5. low latency communications and high reliability and availability services

One important ICT use case for construction enabled by 5G technology is health and safety at worksites.

“To monitor high-risk areas, it is necessary to deploy a network of sensors capable of measuring environmental conditions such as air quality, temperature, or noise. Real-time notification to workers at high-risk positions can prevent numerous accidents and deaths.”

The construction industry is dealing with a variety of hazards, and construction site fire is one of them. The common causes of fire during the construction process are hot work, temporary heaters, arson, smoking, flammable and combustible materials, cooking, temporary electrical and lighting, rechargeable-lithium ion batteries, and lack of fire protection.

5G is the enabler for AI and IoT (Internet of Things). With 5G, we can deploy high-definition cameras in construction sites and connect them reliably to our cloud-based AI construction fire detection system.

5G service was launched in Hong Kong in April 2020. Since then we have been working with the construction industry to apply our AI technology to early detect construction fire. We implemented our construction fire detection pilot systems in multiple worksites in the last 12 months. The worksites include a variety of constructions: high-rise residential buildings, low-density residential area, landmark structures, public facilities and infrastructures.

These innovative projects provided valuable customer feedback and insights to us. With the support from the Subsidy Scheme for Encouraging Early Deployment of 5G program organized by the Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA), we developed a purpose-built risk mitigation solution for construction – LookOut Construction Fire Detection Service. It works seamlessly with 5G-connected surveillance cameras. The major benefits to the construction industry:

  • detect early-stage fire daytime and night-time
  • work with video surveillance cameras deployed in worksites
  • quick-to-deploy and easy-to-use
